The author grew up here at 161
Church Street, then known as
"A. Lenczewski's Bar & Grill."
This photo shows the building
being demolished in the early
1960s to house the new
headquarters of the Amsterdam

St. Stanislaus Church
The corner of Jay and Church
Streets. On the left, the
somewhat mysteriously named
(even then) Hawaiian Klub. To
its right, Mid State Kitchens,
which occupied the building
that formerly housed the Hi
Grade Market. At the extreme
right is the older version of the
Mobil Gas Station, whose
expansion caused the
demolition of all three
structures.
Brownie's Lunch - Amserdam, NY
Brownie's Hot Dogs and
Mexican Hots (with their
wonderful meat sauce and
steamed buns) were renowned
not only on Reid Hill but
throughout the city. Went well
with fries with gravy and a
chaser of chocolate milk.
