| From Baseball's Canadian-American League by David Pietrusza: The Perth Board of Education built Perth Collegiate Institute (P.C.I.). Park before the turn of the century as the local high school field, and it still stands today. The Perth franchise was allowed to use it and erected bleachers. The Rome Sentinel termed it “a diamond far from ideal,” and Gloversviile’s Leader-Republican noted that only one ball had been hit out of it in 1936. Despite the field’s huge dimensions, it had the smallest seating capacity in league history with less than 1,500 seats. “The infield,” recalls Ronald White, “had no grass—clay—and you can imagine the speed of ground balls.... In the outfield the ground was very hard, you had to go like a hound to catch up to the balls.... “Left field had a row of beautiful maples perhaps 335 feet out. There was no fence. You couldn’t knock it out, but it might roll out. Beyond the trees was a street. Center field was wide open to at least 420 feet out. Right field had a snow fence about four feet up about 320 feet out.. |
