Local Heroes: Baseball on Capital Region Diamonds
From Glens Falls to Kingston, Little Falls to Pittsfield, a production by
public broadcaster WMHT chronicles the history of baseball in New
York’s Capital Region .

Narrated by Steve Fitz,
Local Heroes combines exhaustive research, rare
archival film footage, fascinating still photography and revealing original
interviews to bring viewers the full range of the area’s diamond
history, from its mythical beginnings with Ballston Spa native Abner
Doubleday to Heritage Park in Colonie—and everything in between.
There are the legends who came to the region in their heyday, the future
legends who cut their teeth on local diamonds, the pioneers of black
baseball, and the evolution of the game from Capital Region diamonds to
major league stadiums.

And there are the local Hall of Famers: Tim Keefe, Johnny Evers, King
Kelly, Roger Connor, Buck Ewing, Mickey Welch, George Davis, Jack
Chesbro, and Frank Grant.

L.A. Dodgers coach Tommy LaSorda, Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner,
Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Kennedy and Negro Leaguer
Edsall Walker are among the many players, fans, sports writers, and
historians contributing to this celebration of local baseball history,
reminding us that the national pastime is also the Capital Region’s
pastime.
